No Kids Allowed

Towards the end of May and on the very first day of June we saw two sets of our good friends tie the knot. Dave and I had two amazing days; both beautiful weddings, both lots of fun and both no kids allowed – do we see a pattern forming here?! We also have another 2 weddings lined up this year, one in August and one late October – again, both are no kids. It certainly seems to be coming a trend nowadays and obviously having two little angels (or devils?) myself I’ve noticed it’s a topic that can cause divide! It seems both parents and the happy couple don’t want to offend each other! So when the invite hits the door mat the answer is there for all to see in black and white – will they or won’t they be coming along to the party?!

Just recently I was having a chat to one of the expectant brides when the ‘kids’ subject came up, I could sense her shrink a little when she mentioned their wedding would be a childfree affair and do I mind?! I think possibly she may have thought I would be offended in some way – but no, no, quite the opposite. I believe a wedding between two people should be just that. They wouldn’t invite Bob from the office with the bad breath, or Great Aunt Doris who they haven’t seen for 10 years and they certainly shouldn’t have to feel obliged to invite twenty plus kids that are bound to scream throughout the all important ceremony or need a wee during the group photograph! I know it’s a touchy subject because I myself have friends that feel a wedding is a ‘family’ affair and that kids should be there, running around all sweaty doing skids on the dance floor!! But I for one don’t share that view.

Don’t get me wrong, we enjoyed a glorious family wedding last summer; the kids were super excited about their day out and looking smart in their finery, and honestly it was an amazing day. The Bride and Groom (or maybe just the Bride?!) had thought of everything; even laying on childminders whilst the wedding breakfast and speeches were taking place so parents could enjoy their meals and relax. But I have to say, once the evening reception was in full swing and the ‘terrible tiredness’ hits your little one that is the moment that you stop ‘celebrating’! As I scanned the room on that beautiful evening I was struck with the image of mum’s pushing prams back and forth, Dad’s rocking and jigging little ones in their arms, even willing Grandparents were doing their best to settle the kids anyway they can.

Maybe it’s just an age thing, maybe when children get a tad older these social events will become easier to deal with but I have to say I am happy to go ‘child-free’ – for now anyway. That way we are able to give the happy couple the attention they deserve. Anyway, what mum wants to buy the perfect dress and get all dolled up for a baby to throw up over it mid way through the day? And yes, before you ask, that did happen to me when Fin was about 6 months old!! But I guess on the flip side, you can spend too much time thinking about the dress and turn up to the wedding with another guest wearing it – and yes that happened to me too!! It seems you can’t win them all!!
